GNOLIUM /no-lee-yim/ is a progressive rock band from Cape Town, South Africa. Formed in 2005 by composer Michael Tonkin, the band took the form of a two-piece recording outfit with Sebastian Guile on drums. In 2006 they were joined by guitarist Matthew Guile and bassist David Hodgson to form their performing line-up. At the end of the 2006 the band went into a planned hiatus which ended in 2008 with Michael's return to Cape Town. In early 2009 they returned to the performance scene with Enrico Walser playing bass, and were later joined by session musician Greg Abrahams(Peachy Keen, The Nomadic Orchestra) as an additional guitarist in 2010. Currently the band performs only a few times during the year due to Sebastian's work, which has required him to move to Saudi Arabia for a time.
GNOLIUM began production of an album at the time of the band's reformation, which has proven to be a two-year-long project which may result, as rumour has it, in a number of EPs as opposed to the originally intended full-length album.
The band incorporates various influences including progressive rock, ambient, blues, prog-metal, jazz and the rhythmic complexity of math rock into their sound. Most notable is their use of irregular meter and complex poly- and cross-rhythms coupled with strong vocal lines.
GNOLIUM'S music and efforts are leading them towards being a bridging act between the mainstream music of our time and the progressive old world sound of the seventies with every intention of becoming a world-class act.
